Pickleball Scoring Explained for Singles and Doubles

Decode score calls, service order, side-outs and the difference between traditional and rally scoring.

By Punch Volley Guides · Published · Sources rechecked

Official source: Scoring feels harder than striking the first ball because the score also tells players where to stand and who serves. USA Pickleball's public summary describes traditional side-out scoring and a rally-scoring option, while events may specify their own approved format. This guide focuses on understanding each part of the call without losing track of service order. Sources: USA Pickleball, USA Pickleball

This guide is general educational information. Rules, approvals, event formats and local access can change, so confirm current requirements with the relevant governing body, organizer or venue.

Read a doubles score call

Official source: A traditional doubles call uses three numbers: serving team score, receiving team score and server number. Server number identifies the current first or second server, not a permanent identity. Sources: USA Pickleball

Official source: When the serving side wins a rally, it scores and the same server changes service courts. When that side loses, service moves to the partner or becomes a side-out, depending on sequence. Sources: USA Pickleball

Use even and odd positions

Official source: A team's starting server is on the right when that team's score is even and on the left when it is odd. Tracking that anchor helps identify whether partners occupy correct positions. Sources: USA Pickleball, USA Pickleball

Official source: Singles uses two numbers because there is one player per side. Under traditional scoring, the server's own score determines the service court: right for even and left for odd. Sources: USA Pickleball, USA Pickleball

Understand the opening exception

Official source: At the start of a doubles game, only one partner on the initial serving team serves before the first side-out. The conventional opening call reflects that exception. Sources: USA Pickleball

Official source: After the first side-out, each team normally has a first and second server before service transfers. Calling every score before contact makes sequence errors easier to detect. Sources: USA Pickleball

Check the event format

Official source: Traditional scoring awards points only to the serving side. Rally scoring awards a point after rallies under its approved format, but exact service and end-game provisions can differ. Sources: USA Pickleball, USA Pickleball

Official source: A league, tour or tournament should publish the format it uses. Confirm those event rules rather than assuming that a recreational house rule controls sanctioned play. Sources: USA Pickleball, USA Pickleball

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why are there three numbers in doubles scoring?

Official source: The first two numbers are team scores. The third indicates whether the current server is that team's first or second server in the present service turn. Sources: USA Pickleball

Can the receiving team score in traditional scoring?

Official source: No. Under traditional side-out scoring, the receiving side wins the right to serve rather than a point when it wins a rally. Sources: USA Pickleball

Is rally scoring always used in tournaments?

Official source: No. Formats vary by organizer and competition. Check the event's published rules and the current governing rulebook before play. Sources: USA Pickleball
