The Pickleball Guide

Clear, practical answers for new and experienced pickleball players, with links to evidence-aware guides, current reporting and useful sections.

Start playing

Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court with a low net, solid paddles and a perforated plastic ball. Most new players can begin with a borrowed paddle, court shoes, a few balls and a basic understanding of serving, scoring and the non-volley zone.

Learn the rules in short pieces: serve underhand or with a legal drop serve, let the ball bounce once on each side after the serve, and do not volley while touching the non-volley zone. Local open-play sessions are often the simplest route to regular games.

Skills and strategy

Reliable serves, returns and third shots matter more than highlight-reel winners. Give yourself margin over the net, recover to a useful court position and make decisions with your partner rather than treating doubles as two separate singles games.

At the non-volley line, compact preparation and controlled contact usually beat a long backswing. Practice blocks, dinks and resets with a clear target before adding speed.

Paddles, shoes and useful gear

A suitable paddle should feel maneuverable, comfortable in the hand and legal for the events you plan to enter. Shape, swing weight, surface, core and handle length all affect feel; price alone does not determine fit.

Court shoes should provide lateral support and traction for repeated stops and direction changes. Replace worn footwear when the outsole, cushioning or upper no longer performs safely for your movement and court surface.

Prepare, recover and play safely

Pickleball includes rapid acceleration, deceleration, reaching and lateral movement. A progressive warm-up, manageable playing volume, recovery and strength work may help players tolerate those demands, but no routine prevents every injury.

An article cannot diagnose pain or determine whether vigorous activity is safe for an individual. Severe symptoms, chest pain, faintness, substantial swelling, a fall with suspected injury or persistent pain warrant qualified medical care.

Competition and pickleball travel

Before entering an event, confirm the organizer’s format, eligibility, rating requirements, ball, paddle rules, check-in time and weather policy. Tournament formats and sanctioning rules can change, so the official event page controls.

For a pickleball trip, verify court reservations, open-play customs, surface, lighting, fees and local conditions. Pack for the climate and keep enough flexibility for a venue or schedule change.

Common questions

Pickleball Guide FAQ

What is pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddle sport played as singles or doubles on a badminton-sized court. Players use solid paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over a net.

What equipment does a beginner need?

A beginner generally needs a paddle, outdoor or indoor pickleballs suited to the court, supportive court shoes and comfortable athletic clothing. Many clubs and recreation centers lend paddles.

What is the kitchen in pickleball?

The kitchen is the informal name for the seven-foot non-volley zone on each side of the net. A player may enter it, but cannot volley while touching it or after momentum carries them into it.

How does pickleball scoring work?

Traditional doubles commonly uses side-out scoring to 11, win by two, with only the serving team scoring. Some events use rally scoring or different game lengths, so check the organizer’s rules.

How do pickleball ratings work?

Ratings estimate playing level for matchmaking and competition. Systems and scales differ, and self-ratings are not interchangeable with verified tournament ratings. Use the system required by the event or club.

How do I find pickleball games near me?

Check local parks departments, recreation centers, clubs and recognized court directories. Confirm whether a session is open play, a reservation, a clinic or a private league before arriving.

Is pickleball safe for older adults?

Many older adults play pickleball, but individual health, mobility and experience vary. Begin progressively and seek medical guidance when symptoms, recent surgery, chronic conditions or medication make vigorous activity uncertain.

What is the best pickleball paddle?

There is no universal best paddle. A useful choice matches the player’s hand comfort, swing speed, desired reach and control, budget, and any applicable approval rules.
